CPU vs GP – The differences between GPU and CPU
In British English, the main differences between a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) and a CPU (Central Processing Unit) are their functions and architecture.
A CPU is the primary processing unit of a computer and is responsible for executing instructions that control the entire system. It performs the majority of the general-purpose computations and is optimized for single-threaded operations. This means that it excels at handling tasks that require sequential processing, such as running programs, performing arithmetic operations, and managing the operating system. CPUs typically have a few cores, ranging from two to sixteen, and each core can execute one task at a time.
A GPU, on the other hand, is a specialized processing unit designed to handle parallel computations, specifically those related to graphics and video processing. It has thousands of smaller cores, which can handle many tasks simultaneously, making it ideal for data-parallel workloads. GPUs have a highly optimized architecture for parallel processing, which allows them to quickly execute complex mathematical operations used in image processing, machine learning, and other data-intensive applications.
In summary, a CPU is optimized for general-purpose computing, while a GPU is optimized for parallel processing, specifically related to graphics and video processing. While a CPU has fewer cores, each core can execute a task more quickly than a GPU core. In contrast, a GPU has many smaller cores that work together to execute many tasks in parallel, making it ideal for data-parallel workloads.
